Why use PageDefrag?

In order to keep a Windows NT/2000 system running in prime condition, it is necessary to defragment the harddisks regularly, including the operating system's files. Defragmenting a harddisk can be done using the built-in "Disk Defragmenter" in Computer Management.

However, it is impossible to defragment the pagefile, hibernation file and registry files. From a performance point of view, this is imperative. PageDefrag, a freeware utility created by sysInternals, is automatically defragments these files during system startup.

Of course, optimal performance of the operating system also depends on the level of fragmentation of other files on the harddisk. Defragmenting the harddisks is possible using the built-in "Disk Defragmenter" in Computer Management, possibly in combination with contig.

Installation

• Copy the files pagedfrg.exe and pagedfrg.hlp to the Windows NT folder (C:\WinNT)
• Run pagedfrg to start he application
• Select "Defragment paging files and Registry every boot"

• Choose OK to close the application
• Every time the system starts, the PageDefrag will automatically defragment the pagefile, hibernation file and registry files. The first time PageDefrag runs, it might take longer than it will take normally.
